Racing is in Ron Dennis' blood. Dennis began his racing career in 1966 as a mechanic with Cooper, the British race team whose giant-killing hot-rod Minis are remembered with today's Mini Coopers and the John Cooper Works Special models. Since 1980, he's run McLaren Racing, which has won seven Formula 1 Constructors' World Championships and 10 Drivers' World Championships with drivers such as Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen, and, of course, 2008 World Champion Lewis Hamilton.

Sticking ‘RS' on the BACK of an Audi is an Ingolstadt tradition dating back some 15 years now. Having started with an estate car and branched out no further than saloons, it was always the symbol for improbable performance in otherwise rather austere and practical German boxes. The quintessential Q car in other words. Not any more.

The TT RS took all the subtle provisions of Audi's performance arm, design cues meant to revitalise the ordinary, and added them to a car that is, even with its current ubiquity, a tad flash. Now the definition of the ‘RS' badge has been further blurred, glued to a Roadster.

It seems that, in almost every newspaper or news magazine you pick up these days, you'll find a new energy technology. With billions of dollars invested into finding an alternative to fossil fuels-or more likely, many alternatives-we're caught in the midst of a race to discover a cost-effective system for powering the gigantic transportation industry.

Who knows which technologies will ultimately become as commonplace as system ? The question is truly still up in the air...maybe literally, when it comes to hydrogen.
